The grinding of axes and other stone tools was a technological advance of the Neolithic period. The flint was already roughly beaten into the shape of an axe in the quarrying areas and negotiated in this way. Such a blank was then given its final shape by being ground on a stone base with the addition of sand and water. The new technique also made it possible to re-sharpen a blunt cutting edge with little loss of material, as it no longer had to be cut off completely.
