Before sedentism, the only means of foraging were hunting and the gathering of plant foods. The oldest evidence of this subsistence mode in northern Germany dates back to more than 12000 years ago, to the reindeer hunters of the Ice Age. Around 7000 BCE, people of the Mesolithic Period lived in the now dense forests: With their minuscule arrowheads, so-called microliths, they hunted for red deer and wild boar. At the same time, they fished the numerous lakes and rivers and gathered plant foods like hazelnuts, which were very abundant then.
