Excavations by the Archaeological Museum Hamburg on the grounds of the Neuengamme concentration camp, which was used as a prison after the war, revealed remains of the prisoners' barracks, infirmary, and kitchen barracks as well as the detention bunker. The finds recovered reflect the different origins of the deportees, such as French, Russian, Polish and Dutch coins, as well as prisoners' stamps. These and other personal objects of the prisoners, including jewellery they made themselves, complement the written and pictorial testimonies, portray individual fates and give an unfiltered account of the everyday reality of the concentration camp.
