Roman gold coins, so-called solidi, were used to pay Germanic warriors who had served in the Roman army as soldiers and returned to their homeland. The German terms "Soldat" (soldier), "Söldner" (mercenary), "Sold" (pay) and "solide" (solid) can be traced back to these solidi. The two Hamburg solidi show the Emperor Arcadius, who ruled the Eastern Roman Empire from 395 to 408 A.D.
