Showcase

Many large cemeteries from the Iron Age are known from the Lower Elbe region. The urn cemetery at Putensen contains almost a thousand burials from the late Pre-Roman Iron Age and the Roman Imperial Period. Some outstanding warrior graves are characterised by particularly rich grave goods, and the ashes of the deceased were interred in metal vessels of Roman origin. Most of the urns, however, were clay vessels. Almost all of them have been restored and supplemented, and today fill several shelves in the museum's depot - the urn wall in the exhibition shows only a small section of our large archives with over 2.5 million finds.
