Imported goods, for example, fabrics, were sealed with seals that attested to their origin, and quality as well as guaranteeing the integrity of the goods to the recipient. The goods seals were made of lead - hence their name, plumbum is the Latin word for lead - and were occasionally provided with seal impressions.
