In the late Middle Ages, the tiled stove found its way into bourgeois living rooms as a source of heat. From the 15th century onwards, the stoves, which were usually rear-loaded and heated from a neighbouring room, increasingly served representative purposes. Saints and princes as well as religious scenes are depicted on the green or black glazed stove tiles.
