Knives and spoons have been used since time immemorial to pick up, spear and cut up daily food. Until the 19th century, they were the only eating tools in most households. Knives made of flint have been known since the Palaeolithic Age; the oldest spoons come from Neolithic sites. In the 16th century, the fork first came into fashion among the nobility, but from the 18th century onwards it slowly became accepted in simple households as well.
